(OA) Osteoarthritis is derived from the Greek word

arthro meaning joint

Itis= inflammation

Osteoarthritis is known as degenerative joint disease.

It occurs when the cushiony cartilage between two bones becomes worn down, and the bones begin to rub against each other in the joint.

This often leads to pain, swelling, decrease in motion at the joint, stiffness, and formation of bone spurs.

Osteoarthritis can occur in almost any joint, but osteoarthritis of the knee, hip, spine, and hands are the most common types.

Osteoarthritis affects around 30% of individuals aged 45-65 years.

More than 80% of individuals are affected by their eighth decade of life

An equal number of men and women aged 45-55 years suffer from the condition.

After age 55, women are more affected than men.

Cause of Osteoarthritis

  • The exact cause of osteoarthritis is unknown. The conditions thought to cause osteoarthritis are:
  • Old age.
  • Heredity
  • Excess weight
  • Injury to a joint
  • Other types of arthritis can also damage joints and lead to osteoarthritis.

Symptoms of Osteoarthritis

  • Osteoarthritis comes on slowly in most cases.
  • Early in the disease, joints may ache after physical work or exercise.
  • The joints most often affected are the hip, knee, spine, and hand.
  • The warning signs of osteoarthritis are:

Steady or intermittent pain in a joint

Stiffness after getting out of bed

Swelling in one or more joints

A crunching feeling or sound of bone rubbing on bone

Diagnosis of Osteoarthritis

No specific tests for diagnosis of OA.

X-rays are helpful

Joint aspiration may also be helpful in diagnosis

Treatment of Osteoarthritis
